Iris Scott Finger Painting

irisscott9X

Iris Scott chooses to skip the brushes when she creates her oil-painted masterpieces.
Putting on a pair of surgical gloves, she uses her fingers to apply the paint,
coaxing life and movement into these incredible works of art.
Enjoy this gallery of some of my favorites!

God Bless America
by Irving Berlin

God bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies,
to the oceans white with foam,
God bless America,
My home sweet home!
God bless America,
My home sweet home!

William McKinley

mckinley9

Americans are familiar with the assassinations of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. Not as well-known, however, are the names of the two other US presidents who were assassinated while in office: James Garfield and William McKinley.

While driving through Ohio recently, I noticed signs for the town of Niles, which claimed boasting rights as the birthplace of McKinley, our nation's 25th president. Curious, I took the exit ramp and stopped in to tour the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial.

Dramatic columns welcomed me into a stately courtyard, with a marble McKinley presiding. Flanking it to either side was the museum and the library.

William McKinley enlisted in the Union Army and fought in the Civil War.
His commanding officer was fellow-Ohioan and future US president, Rutherford B. Hayes.

McKinley was the first president to
-use campaign buttons.
-have his inauguration ceremony filmed.
-ride in an automobile during his office.

Engraved in the base of the statue:

William McKinley

Soldier
Statesman
President

Born in Niles, Ohio Jan 29th 1843
Died in Buffalo, NY Sept 14th 1901

Just six months into his second term as President, McKinley went to the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY. While greeting the crowd and shaking hands with well-wishers, he was shot twice in the abdomen. Surgery was performed, but infection set in, and he died 10 days later. Vice President Teddy Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States.

Inside the museum, in one of a number of a glass display cases, is this plaque with McKinley's last words:

William McKinley was buried in Canton, Ohio.

His portrait had been on the US $500 bill, which was last printed in 1934.

Mosaic Heart Rocks

heartrock2

Sherri Sanchez, of Newbury Park, California, has always loved working with glass. She makes gorgeous, colorful mirrors and wall hangings, but what caught my eye were these whimsical rocks that she embellishes with mosaic hearts, or as Sherri calls them, "Rocks of Love"! There's something about the wonderful contrast of the glitzy, iridescent glass with the dull gray stone. I think one of these would look perfect on a window sill, or as a paperweight on my desk.

Rice’s Sale & Country Market - New Hope, PA

rices14

Way back in 1860, A .L. Rice auctioned off some items on his Pennsylvania farm. Word spread to neighbors far and wide, who then brought their cattle and farm equipment to be auctioned. Eventually, he added a market to sell produce.

150 years later, Rice's Sale & Country Market has up to 400 vendors selling wares, both old and new. Clothing and accessories, hand-crafted items, plants, antiques and collectibles, baked goods, fruits and vegetables. As beautiful Bucks County's oldest and largest outdoor market, it has become very well known in the area, attracting up to 8,000 customers a day!

Over time, owners Barbara & Bobby Blanche have made strides to update the 30 acre market. They built indoor restrooms, paved the pathways to make wheelchair and stroller use a breeze, and added an ATM.

My dear friend Lisa introduced me to Rice's over 25 years ago, and we've met there many times since. What a fun shopping experience! These photos will give you some idea of what Rice's is all about.
